* dieu merci, c'est vendredi - thank god it's friday
California girl that I am, imagine my delight when I discovered a burrito shack in town! wooohooo!
The first time I checked it out, the owner/chef took me for British (they often do for some reason). "No, I'm American," I said.
He brightened and began rattling off in English tout de suite. "I want you to come back and tell me how you like it," he said, "I'm quite sure you are going to. It is just like the burritos in Boston!"
Ahem. Boston?!? Who knew burritos were a specialty of Boston?! I smiled politely. Then he asked me where I was from.
"California," I replied.
He froze for just an instant then said, "Oh! Well then you really do know about burritos!"
Yes. Yes, I do. And his are really good! En plus, he serves Dos Equis...something else us California girls know a little bit about.
Bon weekend à tous!

i REALLY LOVE this post......who would have known???....having been raised a in a Hispanic community.....*as in* my middle school was in a barrio.......i was a girl on the lookout for a burrito....when i married in the 70's and HAD to move to Ohio : ( i lugged a full case of Rosarita refried beans back with me....and made my own tortillas....a SoCal girl looking for a burrito even back then.....
Madame LER,
You are indeed the original California TGIF girl. As I recall :)))))), you were famous in college, and were know for affinity to burritos and Dos Equis!!!!
Have a great weekend!!
Cheers,
Bubba's Person
oh, thank you, donna! ah yes, us california girls know a thing or two about burrito cravings, don't we? i love that part about the lugging of refried beans! i've done similar things. now i make my own refried beans...not quite the same but still...a girl's gotta have what a girl's gotta have!
when my sister moved from california to minnesota (for love), she also craved good mexican food and thought she had found a little place in her small town that looked promising...right up until the waitress asked her if she wanted 'red gravy' with her burrito...otherwise known as salsa. it's been a joke between us ever since! *and* she now makes a rockin' salsa on her own!
BTY: a six-pack of corona beer will run 10€ here! imagine that!!
HA! I never would have thought about getting a burrito in France! It doesn't sound natural. Somehow I can't get my head around eating burritos in France! LOL
I love hard shelled Tacos and any type of mexican food. Here in Texas we find it everywhere!
Leslie, this put a smile on my face! In 1995 we moved from Chicago to Toronto. Chicago = LOTS of Mexican food, Toronto at the time had none! Whenever someone came to visit they brought 2 things: Delft Detergent (new baby) and refried beans! Though the beer was no problem as there was a large variety of delicious brews!
Diane, I hear ya, girlfriend! You've lived in the burrito void, too! And I know that part about the visitors very well. Visitors chez moi were charged with bringing corn tortillas...but the refried beans is a brilliant idea! donna (in the comment above) has some experience with schlepping cases of beans as well. For those particular cravings, we do what we have to do until the world comes around to recognizing the necessity of burritos in every ville! ;}
Burritos for all is my chant!!!!! ; )
I lost a couple of comments here...catching up:
BP, my oh my...how those college days have haunted me! ;} Must you keep reminding me?!
Kris, living without burritos is what's unnatural!! ;} And yes, there in Texas you are in burrito paradise! You'd miss 'em in France...I assure you! And although the Boca Loca doesn't come close to a good California border (or Texas) Mexican cuisine, it's good enough for me! (I do draw the line at the French twist of mayonaise in sushi...but that's another story...)
donna, i'm with you on that one:
...with liberty and burritos for all! ;}
